Technical Services Unit

The Technical Services Unit is responsible for all technology and computer related services of the department. The Gloucester Township Police Department is committed to providing our officers with “cutting edge” law enforcement technology. This enables the officers to provide the very best services to the public, whom we serve and protect, in ways that weren’t conceivable just 10 years ago.

This unit is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure of the police building, the mobile data terminals in each patrol car, and for keeping our communications systems operating at peak performance. They also are responsible for research, development, and implementation of the new law enforcement technologies. This multi-tasking unit is also responsible for the entire police vehicle fleet, which includes the maintenance and repairs of the vehicle’s radios, emergency lights, sirens, and GPS.

Communitcations Unit

The Communications Unit is an element within the Support Services Division and serves as the vital emergency communications focal point for the Gloucester Township Police Department. The Communications Unit’s dispatchers staff the third most independent active Public Safety Answering Point in Camden County. Operating seven days a week, 24 hours a day, the Unit has the responsibility to respond to all 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency (856) 228-4500 calls. The Unit's dispatch personnel are responsible for deploying the appropriate patrol units throughout the township in response to these calls. Although the Unit's focus is on the law enforcement related calls, the Unit is also a point of contact for citizens requesting fire and emergency medical services. In these instances, the call is immediately connected to the Camden County Fire/EMS Center emergency dispatchers who are located in Lindenwold, NJ.

The Gloucester Township Police Department Emergency 9-1-1 system was implemented to provide the most efficient help to the citizens of Gloucester Township. The Department receives over 20,000 emergency 9-1-1 calls a year, with a large percentage of those calls not being serious emergencies. The highly trained call takers are the first voice that a person hears when they are confronted with an emergency situation and dial 911 for help. The calm, comforting, and composed call taker responding to the 911 emergency calls are responsible for immediately establishing several vital aspects of the situation, including the location and the critical nature of the crisis. Based on the initial conversation, the emergency call-taker must make several time-sensitive decisions which impact critically on the internal routing of the call, and the safety of the caller, as well as the mission and safety of the police officers eventually dispatched in response to the call.

Having established the critical information regarding the emergency, the call-taker coordinates closely with the dispatch operator located in the same communications operations center. This coordination process is conducted in real-time via a computer terminal with a telephone capability to pass additional information as the situation develops.

Police patrol units are alerted to the emergency situation and dispatched to the scene by the communications dispatchers who are specifically trained for this vital mission. Utilizing radio communications and computer connectivity, these dispatchers keep the responding patrol units and patrol supervisors continuously informed as the crisis evolves, from the beginning to the resolution of the situation.

Having a dedicated communications center within the Gloucester Township Police Department ensures that Gloucester Township police officers are alerted to emergency situations in a timely and efficient manner. Residents can be assured that the Gloucester Township Police Department will respond and provide the appropriate level of assistance and professionalism to address the situation.
