In 1986 the Gloucester Township Police Department formed its Special Response Team (SRT). The SRT is the Police Department's tactical unit, also known as SWAT. The SRT consists of highly motivated and experienced officers, who volunteer from within the department. An SRT member is chosen after a rigorous testing and selection process. Once appointed, the member obtains training in a variety of specialized tactics and skills, which require equipment and techniques that are beyond the normal scope of training for most police officers.

Their mission is to protect the lives of citizens and members of law enforcement during high risk incidents such as hostage rescue, barricaded persons, suicidal/armed persons, rapid deployment, terrorist acts, civil disorder, dignitary protection and the service of arrest and search warrants. The SRT is a valuable resource and its use decreases the likelihood for resistance and enhances the safety of police personnel and the citizens they protect.

The Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) is part of the SRT. These highly trained officers are specialists in successfully resolving various types of critical incidents.

The SRT vehicle is a 1999 Grumman Olsen/Chevrolet, which was custom made to carry equipment and personnel. It also has a communication center making it able to function as a command post and work in conjunction with the Mobile Command Unit. Both vehicles were proudly purchased and equipped with confiscated drug funds and grant money.
